Dogwood Alliance’s Largest Donor Funded Some Of The Most Virulent Hate Groups In America

When you claim to fight for justice, but receive the majority of your cash from a billionaire who funds some of the most virulent hate groups in America, that’s the very definition of hypocrisy.

And that’s exactly what the Dogwood Alliance, the extreme anti-forestry activist group based in Ashville, North Carolina, has been caught doing.

A bombshell story in the Charlotte Observer reveals how the Foundation for the Carolinas (FFTC), with nearly $400 million in funding from billionaire Fred Stanback, has funneled some $20 million to anti-immigrant groups for years, including NumbersUSA, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), and the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), the latter two of which have been designated “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The immigration advocacy group America’s Voice has stated that the cash from Stanback is “fueling violence” and “undermining the fabric of American communities,” and demanded the Foundation for the Carolinas stop funding these groups.

An analysis of federal tax disclosures by Future Forests + Jobs shows that the Dogwood Alliance has been bankrolled by this very same billionaire/foundation. Between 2003 and 2017, the Dogwood Alliance has accepted over $5,900,000 from Stanback/FFTC. In fact, the Foundation for the Carolinas is Dogwood’s largest contributor, representing an average of 61% of Dogwood’s total fundraising between 2014 and 2017.

This is shameful. The Dogwood Alliance says it fights for justice, but it looks the other way while its benefactor spreads racism and hate.
